    Musings: Xander and Gender Reversal
Title: Xander and Gender Reversal (written for [info]spring_with_xan)

Spoilers: All seasons of BtVS, including S8.

Notes: I'm not sure if I'd call this an essay. I didn't have time to do research, most of it is just me rambling.

Thanks to [info]vampmogs for reading this and providing me with the S8 images.

    Previously On segments...
    Hi!

I posted a few weeks ago some questions about the use of previously/recap segments on Buffy (thank you to all of you who responded!). I'm writing a chapter in my thesis on the disappearance of previouslies on DVD, and I've found that most, if not all, of the US DVD season sets remove the previously segments that were originally including at the beginning of broadcast episodes. So I'm trying to uncover how that changes the viewing experience, if at all.

If you're interested in weighing in as a Buffy devotee, I'd love your insights! I have some questions over at my LJ about how the recaps function; I'm particuarly interested in moments of spoiling as well; there's a whole chapter on that too...

If nothing else, it's a chance to reminisce about the good ol' days, favorite episodes and characters, times the previouslies made you tear-jerk or yell in frustration because you knew that this character was probably going to die or you'd seen enough of this romance montage....

    Previously On segments...
    Hello, hello.

I'm new to the community, and I come bearing a question.

I'm working on a paper that examines how the "previously on.." segments of TV shows change over time and by episode and do or do not affect the way we view an episode. I've found that, at least with Season 1, these segments were aired on TV originally and then cut from the DVD. I'm told that other seasons had excessively long previously segments when originally aired, and I'm wondering if that's the case, and if they were also cut from the DVDs. I'm examining the DVD season sets, but I really have no way of accessing the original TV airings beyond my very limited memory. Instead, I'm calling upon yours, if you have a moment to spare.

Do you have an idea of which seasons made more or less use of the "previously on" montage? Did you find them useful or excessive? Do you know by chance of any way I could access the versions of the episodes that were originally aired (online, perhaps)?

I hope this post is appropriate; if not, please delete and I apologize. I was only an occassional Buffy viewer, and as I'm rewatching the seasons, I'm really enjoying them. My overall project focuses on a variety of TV shows - it's for my Master's thesis, actually, in film and media studies. I'm interested in how various paratexts surrounding a show influences how we view it and what we do with them - trailers, previouslies, next-time-on's, ads, etc.

    Thanks for your help!

    It will end in tears.
I know this is a forum for mostly philosophical questions regarding our show, but, I have some distressing news.
    Buffy movie relaunch
Never mind that they're rebooting the movie, they are also not including some vital characters.
For example, Willow, Xander, Spike, and oh yeah... JOSS WHEDON!

They want to go on with this project without him being involved.

I could not keep this to myself, and if the mods feel I've overstepped and need to remove this, so be it.
But the 'verse needs to know.

    Cecily=Halfrek?
How many people think Cecily was really Halfrek in disguise during the flashback of "Fool for Love"?

How many think Halfrek was Cecily before she became a vengeance demon?

Is it just a casting choice with no other narrative purpose?

Did Joss ever answer this question?
